ISO thonet chairs....

I really want some bentwood chairs for my kitchen nook.  Specifically, something in the style of Thonet's No. 14 chair.

Right now, we are using formal dining chairs in there and it can be a little tight to squeeze past.  I think a daintier chair will help with the footprint.  I decided to move this up the priority list a few weeks ago, but now that Char's party is next week....I kind of want them now :)  I only need two, but the trouble with antiquing is that once you are looking for it they aren't there.

For a history of Thonet chairs, this Apartment Therapy article (from 2010!) is pretty good, as is this peice on House Appeal.

Serena and Lily have a great model, and the colors are on sale right now for $147....super tempting.  I feel like these would be well made, which is a problem when searching vintage offerings--some are very rickety.

Currently $147

Crate & Barrel has some.  Overstock, Hayneedle, .....as well as eBay and Etsy.  There are options.

eBay $199 for pair

Overstock, $103 each
Overstock $169/pair

Hayneedle $371/pair

I found that there are a lot of cheap, metal versions.  I think I'll hold out for wood, but then I wonder if a heavier chair is good with kids--you know what I mean?

Overstock

The real question is whether to wait until I find them dirt cheap, or bite the bullet for immediate gratification.

  1. Wow- love the chairs. I somehow missed this. I would buy the red ones now. At $147 they seem reasonable. The problem with the heavier chairs, in my experience, is that when they fall they are dangerous. Your kids are not crazy so it might not be a problem but remember Mary's finger. Yikes. that was even a wooden chair. Too light they flip too heavy they damage. I love the look.
